DEADLINE
APPROACHING FOR NCPA MERIT SCHOLARSHIP - The deadline for
submitting an application for NCPA’s Merit Scholarship, which provides
scholarships for the children and/or legal guardians of NCPA members, is
fast approaching. Each scholarship is for $1,000 and will provide for
tuition, books, and/or room and board expenses. The scholarship is limited
to use at an institution of higher learning that is accredited by
recognized accreditation agencies and offers at least a degree upon
completion of the course of study offered. The scholarship is made
possible through funds established by the Mississippi Valley Oilseed
Processors Association and provides the NCPA with “…oversight
authority as to the charitable, scientific and educational uses of annual
accumulated income derived from the principal of the funds”.
Applications are available from the NCPA office and in the What’s New
section of www.cottonseed.com. Scholarship applications will be due to the
NCPA office no later than June 15, 2007. Following a review of the
applicants by the Association’s Scholarship Committee, finalists will be
forwarded to the NCPA Board of Directors for final selection of the
winners, to be announced around August 1. Applicants will be asked to
write an autobiography explaining why they will be a good investment if
awarded the scholarship. In addition, applicants will be asked to write an
essay describing why agriculture is important to them and/or their family.
Student applicants will not be required to make agriculture their major
course of study, but must present a good understanding of how and why
agriculture is important to them, their community and the US. Applicants
may be graduating high school seniors and/or current students at an
accredited institution. The number of scholarships awarded will be subject
to available funds.
RESTAURANT
TRADE MAGAZINE PICKS UP COTTONSEED OIL ARTICLE - Harvest PR
attended the National Restaurant Association trade show on behalf of NCPA
last month, meeting with several food trade magazine editors and key
contacts within the restaurant industry to promote the use of cottonseed
oil as a trans free solution. During the show, QSR Magazine interviewed
Harvest PR and ran a full article about cottonseed oil later that day on
the QSR website. This story may run in a future print edition of the
magazine. To read the article, go to http://www.qsrmagazine.com/articles/news/story.phtml?id=5475.
QSR Magazine receives nearly 100,000 unique visitors to its website each
month. Harvest PR also took the opportunity to meet with key suppliers and
manufacturers at the NRA show, including ConAgra, ACH, ADM, Riceland
Foods, J.M. Smucker and Lance Snacks, all of whom are interested in
exploring potential joint-marketing efforts to spread the good news of
cottonseed oil! Next up on the agenda – Harvest PR is attending the July
IFT (Institute of Food Technology) annual meeting, to meet with more
industry media and food processing decision makers!
WHAT'S
NEW @ COTTONSEED.COM - US cottonseed meal exports totaled
10,959 mt in April, according to the latest data from US Census. That
brings total CSM exports for the Oct-Apr period to 45,567 mt compared to
73,174 mt during the same period a year ago. Meal shipments to Mexico
stand at 44,247 mt vs 66,195 mt for Oct-Apr of 2005/06. Complete details
are available in the Statistics section of the NCPA web site and in this
edition of the NCPA Newsletter…..Be sure to note important meeting dates
in the Cottonseed Calendar.

NCPA’S
CONSULTANT REPORTS ON MEXICO - NCPA’s consultant in Mexico,
Ricardo Silva, reports the peso has increased slightly from 11.15MX to
$1.00USD during the last month to a constant value of 10.8MX to $1.00USD
at the moment. The demand for US cottonseed meal in Mexico has not
diminished but shown consistency in areas as Guadalajara, a major importer
of US cottonseed meal. For Monterrey, other ingredients, such as DDG’s,
have been gaining usage. Soybean meal, according to the consultant, is
replacing cottonseed meal in some diets due to market conditions. The
price of US cottonseed meal in Monterrey at the moment is reported at $235
USD/mt. RAGASA of Monterrey also is reported to have been crushing
cottonseed more than their normal established quota from January to April
of this year which is contributing to a positive supply of meal in the
Monterrey market area. The state of Veracruz, located in southern Mexico
and bordering with the Gulf of Mexico, has maintained its use of US
cottonseed meal at approximately 4,000 metric tons per year, according to
sellers in the area. This region was visited in previous occasions by the
consultant promoting its use. They will be revisited in the month of June
to continue the promotion of NCPA products.

JUNE
2007 WORLD AG SUPPLY & DEMAND ESTIMATE - This month’s
World Agricultural Supply & Demand Estimate (WASDE) report for 2007/08
shows U.S. oilseed supply and use projections with slight reductions in
beginning and ending stocks. Soybean production, trade, and ending stocks
projections are all unchanged. Soybean ending stocks for 2007/08 are
projected at 320 million bushels, down almost 50 percent from 2006/07.
Other changes this month include reduced soybean oil used for biodiesel
for 2006/07 and 2007/08 as returns to biodiesel production become less
favorable due to higher vegetable oil prices. The U.S. season-average
soybean price for 2007/08 is projected at $6.65 to $7.65 per bushel, up 15
cents on both ends of the range. The increase reflects
higher-than-expected forward pricing opportunities in recent weeks, in
part due to stronger soybean oil prices. Soybean meal prices for 2007/08
are projected at $185 to $215 per short ton, unchanged from last month.
Soybean oil prices are projected at 30.5 to 34.5 cents per pound, up 1
cent on both ends of the range. Global oilseed production for 2007/08 is
projected at 399 million tons, down 5.4 million tons from 2006/07. If
realized, this would be the first year-to-year decline in global oilseed
production since 1995/96. Foreign oilseed production is projected at 315
million tons, up 7 million tons from 2006/07. Global soybean production is
projected to decrease 10 million tons to 225 million tons. Most of the
reduction is due to lower production prospects in the United States as
producers reduced planted area sharply from 2006/07. Higher soybean
production is projected for both Brazil and Argentina as increased area in
both countries more than offsets reduced yields. Higher area is projected
for Argentina despite increased corn planting as producers increase second
crop soybean production and continue to expand plantings on to pasture
land. The Brazil crop is projected at 61 million tons, up 2 million from
the revised estimate for 2006/07. (http://www.usda.gov/oce/commodity/wasde/latest.txt)
