The US Embassy in Mexico recently issued its outlook for oilseeds and
oilseed products for Mexico. According to USDA-FAS analysis, consumption and imports of oilseeds products are
expected to continue to increase, albeit at a slower pace in 2003/04 than
in 2002/03, as “economic prospects augur a lower growth than previously
expected.” Forecasters expect imports of protein meals to rise approximately 4.5 percent in
2003/04, fueled by the livestock industry's ongoing expansion. Total edible oil imports are projected to increase by 5 percent to
reach 583,000 metric tons. Cottonseed production is forecast to increase, due to the expectation of federal
government supports. For cottonseed meal, forecasters paint a rosy picture. Consumption figures for
2001/02 and 2002/03 have been revised upward, and 2003/04 imports are
forecast to increase, due to expansion in the dairy industry. The demand for protein meals by the cattle industry should also
rise. Cattlemen with medium and small sized herds are gradually increasing
their herds, according to USDA.
